What a Welder payslip looks like

A typical UK welder payslip is paid weekly and shows a basic pay line at the top. Coded welders out-earn the trade median materially; agency placements often run via umbrellas. The line items below depend on grade, shift pattern and contractual additions, but the structure usually mirrors HMRC's recommended payslip layout: a payments block, a deductions block, a year-to-date column, and a net pay summary.

Common employers in this occupation include BAE Systems, Babcock International, Self-employed/agency. Each employer runs payroll slightly differently, but the underlying PAYE computation against tax code 1257L (umbrella often shows employer NI passed through) and Class 1 National Insurance is identical across the UK (excluding Scotland for income tax). The biggest variability between two welder payslips at the same gross will be in the additions block: Coded welders (TIG/MIG/MMA) earn premium over time-served, plus travel/subsistence on shutdowns. Agency welders see umbrella deductions including Apprenticeship Levy.

Year-to-date columns are critical to verify on this role because the additions and salary sacrifice items change month to month. If your YTD gross divided by months elapsed in the tax year does not match your expected annual run-rate, that is the single best signal that something is mis-coded.

Flat rate expenses for uniforms, work clothing and tools and welder pay

Welders are listed by name twice, both times at £140: once in the long constructional engineering line alongside burners, platers and riggers, and once in the shipyards line alongside boilermakers and shipwrights. Constructional engineering means engineering on a construction site, including buildings, shipyards, bridges and roads. The same ticket earns £80 in a components factory, where no welding occupation is named and you take the all other workers figure. Where you strike the arc decides which of the two you claim.

Depends how you are engaged

Agency workers and the twelve week qualifying period and welder pay

The registry lists self employed and agency work together as a route for welders, and the two land in opposite places. Genuinely in business on your own account, with the firm as your client, you are outside these regulations altogether. Supplied by an agency to weld under the firm's direction, you are inside them. The coding is then the thing to watch in any comparison, because a real comparator has to hold a similar level of qualification and skill: a coded TIG or MMA welder is measured against a coded welder on the books, not against a time served fabricator on the same shop floor.
