When to contact HMRC

PayslipIQ is a second opinion. The source of truth on your tax record is HMRC.

Contact HMRC if...

  • Your tax code looks wrong and your personal tax account P2 coding notice does not match the code on your payslip for two pay periods.
  • You are on emergency basis (M1, W1 or X) for more than 1-2 pay periods after a job change.
  • You believe you over-paid tax in a previous year.
  • You started or stopped a second job, gained or lost taxable benefits, or your marriage allowance status changed.
  • You have multiple employments and want to defer NI (category J or Z).
  • You think your student loan plan is wrong.
  • You suspect a benefit-in-kind has been added to your code that you do not recognise.

HMRC channels

  • Personal tax accountgov.uk/personal-tax-account.
  • HMRC PAYE helpline — 0300 200 3300 (Mon-Fri 8am-6pm).
  • HMRC Self Assessment — 0300 200 3310.

Contact payroll instead if

The issue is per-period — wrong gross, missed overtime, holiday pay, deduction you do not recognise, salary sacrifice not applied.

Contact pension provider or accountant if

  • Pension provider — contribution rate, transfer, annual-allowance, statement queries.
  • Accountant — multiple income sources, foreign income, redundancy, share schemes.
  • Citizens Advice or Acas — unpaid wages, holiday pay disputes, unlawful deductions.
