How this calculator works
HMRC publishes "approved" mileage rates — the tax-free amount your employer can reimburse you for using your own vehicle for business journeys. For cars and vans the rates are 45p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles in a tax year and 25p per mile above that. If your employer pays less, you can claim Mileage Allowance Relief on the shortfall at your marginal income tax rate. You can backdate up to 4 tax years.
