Common questions

What is STPCD?

The School Teachers Pay and Conditions Document. It sets the pay framework for teachers in maintained schools in England and Wales. STPCD splits teachers into Main Pay Range (MPR), Upper Pay Range (UPR), Leading Practitioner Range, and Leadership Range. Your payslip should show which range and which point you sit on.

What is the Teachers Pension contribution?

Member contributions to Teachers Pension Scheme are tiered by salary, currently between 7.4 percent (lowest tier) and 11.7 percent (highest tier). Employer contribution is around 28.6 percent in 2026. Your payslip shows only your member portion.

Do I get London allowance?

Inner London, Outer London and the London Fringe attract additional payments on top of the basic STPCD scale. If you teach within Inner London the addition is roughly 7,000 GBP a year on the main scale; check your specific contract for the exact figure.

Why is my pension contribution different from my colleague's?

Tier-based contributions mean you and a colleague on different scale points pay different percentages. A move up the scale or a TLR (Teaching and Learning Responsibility) payment can push you into a higher tier mid-year.
