Common questions
What is Agenda for Change?
The pay framework used by NHS staff in England, Scotland and Wales (excluding doctors and dentists). It groups roles into 9 bands; each band has multiple steps. Your payslip should show your band, step, and the WTE (whole-time equivalent) salary that drives your gross pay.
What is the NHS Pension tier?
NHS Pension contributions are tiered by salary, currently from 5.1 percent at the lowest tier to 14.5 percent at the highest. The exact tier on your payslip should match the band published in the latest scheme year. If your tier looks too high, query it with payroll.
Why does my Bank shift get taxed at 40 percent?
A Bank shift is often treated as a second job by HMRC, attracting a BR or D0 tax code on the second payslip. That is not extra tax overall - it just shifts when you pay it. The annual reconciliation (or P800) returns any overpayment.
What does Whitley mean on my payslip?
Whitley is the pre-Agenda-for-Change pay framework. Some unsocial-hours and overtime enhancements still use Whitley terminology on payslips. Your Trust HR can explain which Whitley provisions apply to your role.
