Nurse payslip guide - bands 5 to 8 decoded

Nurses are paid through Agenda for Change, the same framework as other NHS staff. This guide focuses on the band structure most nurses see (5 to 8) and what shows up on the payslip.

Band 5 - Newly Qualified to Senior Staff Nurse

Band 5 has multiple step points. Most nurses spend 2 to 5 years on band 5 before applying for band 6 roles.

Band 6 - Senior Staff / Specialist Nurse

Band 6 is the most common destination for experienced nurses. Step progression is similar to band 5.

Section 2 unsocial hours

Section 2 percentages depend on your band. Higher bands see lower percentage uplifts. The line on the payslip is the sum of unsocial hours worked multiplied by the relevant rate.

NHS Pension tiers

Tiered contributions apply. Moving from band 5 step 5 to band 6 step 1 normally crosses a tier, increasing the contribution rate.

FAQs

I went from band 5 to band 6 and my take-home only went up by a small amount. Why?

Crossing a pension tier raises the contribution rate on all pensionable pay. Plus the band 6 starting point may be only marginally higher than your band 5 top point. Run both monthly figures through the free checker to see the breakdown.
